With reasonable care a new bespoke shirt will continue to look good for several years. Ideally to maximise longevity and quality of look, shirts should be washed and ironed at home. However we appreciate that lack of time and/or a hectic travel schedule can mean that this is not always practical.

When washing your shirts at home John Cutler suggests the following guidelines, which we hope you find helpful:

• Always remember to remove collar bones (stiffeners) and cufflinks before washing
• Always use a trusted detergent
• Wash dark colours separately
• Preferably wash by hand in cold or lukewarm water, but if machine washing, use a gentle cycle and water no hotter than 40 degrees centigrade. Ideally place shirts in a lingerie bag to prevent the collars and cuffs chafing during the spin cycle.
• Do not tumble dry. Instead allow shirts to drip dry on a coat hanger, ideally out of doors
• When ironing best results will be achieved when the shirt is still slightly damp and/or by using a steam iron
• For dark shirts iron on the inside of the collar to avoid fading
• Iron the collar away from the points towards the back of the neck to avoid creasing
• After ironing place on a supportive wooden, or thicker plastic hanger. Avoid wire hangers if possible
• To restore colour and brightness, shirts can be soaked in Napisan every four or five wears
• Resew buttons that work loose to avoid losing them
